You probably hear "machine built" pretty often when looking into new wheels. The reasons machine built wheels fall short of handbuilt wheels are numerous, so I won't get too deep into that here. Check the link below to see a short video of what processes a wheel goes through to be laced, tensioned, and "trued" all in a matter of a few minutes.
A few minutes may seem like an appropriate amount of time to build a wheel, but when you are talking about mixing brass, steel, aluminum, and carbon all in a perfectly tensioned balance you start to realise that maybe "a few minutes" is too short. Not to mention the inability of machines to identify small inconsistencies in materials, compensate for less than ideal hub/rim interfaces, and just generally give attention to detail. But as promised, we'll keep things light today. Take a look at the video, did your wheels come from this machine?
